Average prop firm challenge cost

6 min read·Updated July 20, 2026

The average evaluation entry price is $82 (median $59), ranging from $13 to $345 across 34 firms.

Entry price is the number traders anchor on first, and it is also the number that varies most across the industry — an 27x spread between our cheapest and most expensive listed evaluations. That spread is not simply "cheap firms are worse": price correlates weakly with payout evidence in our dataset, and several of the cheapest evaluations we track belong to firms with respectable payout-proof scores, because deep discounting is a customer-acquisition strategy for firms competing on volume rather than a signal of financial distress by itself.

Category matters more than most traders expect. Futures evaluations average $72 against forex evaluations at $84, reflecting genuinely different cost structures — futures firms pass through exchange data fees and often use smaller nominal account sizes, while forex firms are pricing access to larger simulated allocations with correspondingly higher fees.

13 of the firms we track (38%) run a standing public discount code rather than list-price-only. A permanent "limited time" discount is worth reading, not just using: our firm health monitoring treats a discount that never expires as a mild signal that current fee income may be propping up cash flow, though it is far from conclusive on its own and needs to be read alongside payout evidence and rule stability.

Methodology & sources

  • Entry price reflects each firm's cheapest listed evaluation tier for a comparable smallest account size, before any discount code is applied.
  • Category averages are simple means; futures and forex categories dominate sample size relative to crypto and multi-asset.
  • Discount availability is based on a currently active, publicly listed code at time of verification.

FAQ

How much does the average prop firm evaluation cost?
Across our dataset the average is $82, with a median of $59. Futures evaluations tend to run cheaper than forex evaluations of a comparable simulated account size.
Does a cheaper evaluation mean a worse firm?
Not reliably. Price correlates weakly with payout evidence in our data. A permanent, never-expiring discount is a mild yellow flag worth checking alongside other signals, but low price alone is not evidence of a problem.
