What MetaTrader 5 actually is

MetaTrader 5 is the closest thing to a default standard in forex and CFD prop trading. Released by MetaQuotes as the successor to MT4, it extended the platform beyond pure forex into a genuine multi-asset terminal supporting CFDs on stocks, indices, commodities and, on some broker configurations, futures and options. For prop traders, its biggest practical advantage isn't any single feature — it's ubiquity: MT5 is supported by more prop firms than any other single platform, which means choosing it as your primary tool keeps the widest possible set of firms available to you.

The platform's real depth lives in MQL5, its native programming language for building Expert Advisors, custom indicators and scripts. MQL5's ecosystem dwarfs every competitor covered on this page — tens of thousands of EAs and indicators are available through MetaQuotes' own Market, alongside an enormous body of free and paid third-party code. The built-in Strategy Tester supports multi-currency backtesting and optimization, which is genuinely useful for systematic traders, though MQL5 is not backward-compatible with MQL4, so traders migrating from MT4 need to port or rebuild existing bots rather than run them unmodified.

MT5's main weakness is that it hasn't meaningfully modernized its interface in years — charting and layout customization trail TradingView, cTrader and TradeLocker noticeably, and new traders often find the UI dated on first use. It's also worth remembering that MetaTrader itself doesn't guarantee execution quality: spreads, slippage and order-routing behavior are entirely a function of the specific broker or prop firm's server setup behind the terminal, so two firms both offering 'MT5' can trade very differently in practice. Traders should judge the firm's execution, not the platform label, when comparing MT5 offers.

Strengths

  • + By far the largest third-party EA, indicator and signal-copying ecosystem in retail trading
  • + Near-universal broker and prop firm support — the closest thing to a default standard in forex/CFD prop trading
  • + Multi-asset support (forex, stocks, futures CFDs, options in some regions) beyond MT4's forex focus

Weaknesses

  • Interface and charting feel dated next to TradingView, cTrader or TradeLocker
  • MQL5 has a steeper learning curve than some newer languages, and isn't backward-compatible with MQL4 EAs
  • Depth-of-market and execution transparency depend heavily on the individual broker's configuration

Data feeds and connectivity

Pricing and execution quality depend entirely on the broker's own liquidity and server setup behind the MT5 terminal; the platform itself doesn't guarantee any particular feed quality.

Automation and API access

MQL5 is the most widely used retail algorithmic-trading language in the industry, with the largest Expert Advisor and custom-indicator marketplace of any platform, plus a built-in Strategy Tester for backtesting and optimization.

MetaTrader 5 FAQ

Is MetaTrader 5 better than MetaTrader 4 for prop trading?
MT5 is the newer, more capable platform — multi-asset support, a more powerful Strategy Tester, and ongoing MetaQuotes development, versus MT4 which is functionally frozen. The main reason to still choose MT4 is if you have an existing library of MQL4 Expert Advisors that haven't been ported to MQL5.
Does MT5 cost anything for traders?
No — the terminal itself is free to download and use. Costs come from the prop firm's evaluation/funded-account fees and any paid EAs or indicators you choose to buy from the MQL5 Market or third parties.
Can I run the same Expert Advisor on MT4 and MT5?
No — MQL5 is not backward-compatible with MQL4. Bots and indicators generally need to be rewritten or ported to run on MT5, even though the languages are similar in structure.
Why do so many prop firms list MT5 as a platform?
Because it's the closest thing to an industry standard in forex/CFD prop trading — broad broker support, a mature liquidity-bridge ecosystem, and trader familiarity make it the lowest-friction platform for a firm to offer.
