What TopstepX actually is
TopstepX is Topstep's own browser-based trading platform, and it's the clearest surviving example of the ProjectX lineage now that ProjectX itself is winding down third-party licensing. Topstep effectively took the ProjectX front end in-house and rebranded it, continuing to build on the same no-install, browser-first design while integrating it more tightly with Topstep's own account rules, risk dashboards and combine/evaluation structure. For traders who are evaluating specifically with Topstep, TopstepX has become the default platform experience rather than one option among several.
Because TopstepX still runs on Rithmic-connected infrastructure underneath, the execution and data quality traders get is fundamentally the same as any other Rithmic-based futures platform — the differentiation is entirely in the interface and how tightly it's wired into Topstep's specific rule engine (daily loss limits, trailing thresholds, consistency checks) so violations are flagged in real time rather than discovered after the fact. That tight integration is arguably TopstepX's biggest practical advantage over connecting a generic NinjaTrader or Tradovate instance to a Topstep account: fewer surprises around account-level rule enforcement.
The obvious limitation is portability: TopstepX is Topstep's proprietary front end, so unlike a Rithmic or NinjaTrader connection, you can't take a 'TopstepX license' to a different prop firm — if you move to a different futures firm, you'll be using whatever platform that firm supports instead. Traders who value platform continuity across multiple funded accounts at different firms may prefer to standardize on NinjaTrader or a direct Rithmic connection instead, and treat TopstepX as specific to a Topstep relationship.
Strengths
- + No-install browser terminal that's easy for newer futures traders to pick up quickly
- + Tightly integrated with Topstep's own risk dashboards and account rules, reducing rule-violation surprises
- + Actively maintained and being invested in as Topstep's primary front end going forward, unlike third-party ProjectX licensing which is winding down
Weaknesses
- − Exclusive to Topstep — you can't use TopstepX at a different prop firm the way you can move a Rithmic or NinjaTrader connection between firms
- − Charting and indicator depth trail TradingView and NinjaTrader
- − No native mobile app yet, only a mobile-responsive web view
Data feeds and connectivity
Built on the same underlying Rithmic-connected infrastructure that ProjectX used before Topstep took the front end fully in-house, so feed quality and latency track Rithmic's network.
Automation and API access
Offers API access aimed at traders wanting to connect third-party tools or simple bots, inheriting much of the ProjectX-era tooling, but it remains less complete than NinjaTrader's NinjaScript or a direct Rithmic API connection for heavy algo development.

TopstepX FAQ
- Is TopstepX the same as ProjectX?
- They share the same lineage — TopstepX began as Topstep's implementation of the ProjectX platform and has since been developed in-house as ProjectX wound down its third-party licensing to most other partner firms. Functionally, TopstepX is now Topstep's own branded front end.
- Can I use TopstepX at other prop firms?
- No — TopstepX is exclusive to Topstep accounts. If you trade with a different futures prop firm, you'll use whatever platform that firm supports (commonly NinjaTrader, Tradovate, or a Rithmic connection).
- Does TopstepX cost extra?
- No — it's included with a Topstep Trading Combine or funded account; there's no separate TopstepX subscription fee.
- Is TopstepX good for automated trading?
- It offers API access for traders who want to connect external tools, but it's not as deep as NinjaTrader's NinjaScript environment or a direct Rithmic API connection. Heavy algo traders on a Topstep account often still connect NinjaTrader or another Rithmic-compatible platform instead.
